Today I played with a beautiful set of oil paints, a particular size of canvas and a beautiful subject.
I used a set of only 5 colors, yellow, cyan (a shade 'of blue), magenta (a shade' of red), white and dark green and I enjoyed playing and combine these colors together to create all the other colors using basic principles of color theory. What you see in the picture, is only the the first coat of oil paint. I am deeply in love with oil paints ......so 'creamy and soft ... sometimes it seems to work with butter, the brush is 'free from constraints of any kind,  the hand  is ' free to move on the canvas with lightness and precision ...... like when the butter melts on a warm slice of bread or  when the wind moves the waves of the sea. Painting with oil colors feels like painting  pure poetry on a white canvas.

If you also want to try to play with oil colors I suggest the brand M Graham solvent-free-set of 5.

Oggi ho giocato con un bellissimo set di colori ad olio , un canvas dalle dimensioni particolari e un soggetto bellissimo anche se all'apparenza banale. Ho usato un set di soli 5 colori, il giallo, il ciano (una tonalita' di blue) ,il magenta una tonalita' di rosso, il bianco e un verde scuro e mi sono divertita a giocare e a combinare questi colori fra di loro per creare tutti gli altri come da manuale della teoria dei colori. Quello che vedete nella foto e' solamente la stesura della prima mano di colori ad olio. Sono innamoratissima dei colori ad olio  cosi' cremosi e morbidi... a volte mi sembra di lavorare con il burro , il pennello e' libero da vincoli di qualsiasi genere, la mano e' libera di muoversi sulla tela con leggerezza e precisione......come quando si spalma il burro sulla fetta biscottata calda come quando il vento muove le onde del mare. 

Dipingere con i colori ad olio ti fa sentire un poeta, ti fa dipingere poesia pura sulla tela bianca.

Se volete provare a giocare anche voi con i colori ad olio vi suggerisco la marca M Graham priva di solventi -set da 5.

Today's painting is  dedicated to my mother. She loves all types of cats, domestic and wild and like the cats she is independent, intelligent  and wild.

 

Il dipinto di oggi e' dedicato a mia madre. Lei adora i gatti domestici e selvatici. I gatti le assomigliano molto sono, come lei , indipendenti, intelligenti e selvaggi.

The  most 'beautiful idea   always comes  out of nowhere during days when you do not know what to paint. Days in which you  wander  nonsensically in search of a special idea, a big , unique subject to paint. Looking for a strong magnificent subject  ,.... then you realize that  the little things, the small details, two complementary colors such as red and greenish  blue  are the subject  for your important painting. In the paintings  as in life sometimes  we do not realize that what we need is  right in front of our eyes. We must not look far ...because everything we need is given to us on a daily basis  as a gift from above.





Le idee piu' belle arrivano sempre cosi' dal nulla durante giornate in cui non sai proprio cosa dipingere. Giornate in cui vaghi senza senso in cerca di un' idea speciale, di un soggetto grande, unico, speciale. Cerchi un soggetto imponente , GRANDIOSO poi ti rendi conto che sono invece  le piccole cose , i piccoli dettagli , due colori complementari come il rosso e l'a zzurro verdastro a rendere un dipinto importante. Nei dipinti cosi' come nella vita a volte non ci accorgiamo che quello che ci serve e' proprio sotto ai nostri occhi. Non dobbiamo cercare lontano tutto quello di cui abbiamo bisogno ci viene donato giornalmente............

I like this portrait a lot.. This  is the portrait of a lady with a rocker soul yet with a very sweet personality .

Il primo ritratto e' finito . adesso ce ne sono altri due da terminare.
Questo ritratto mi piace particolarmente. E' il ritratto di una persona con l'anima rocchettara e dolce allo stesso tempo.

Trompe-l'œil bag (05/17/13)

Today was a busy day...three portraits to finish and no of time left for a daily artwork  to post...so I have decided to post a pic of a Trompe-l'œil bag I painted a few years ago.
Trompe-l'œil  is an art technique involving realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion   that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions.

I could not resist! Instead of completing the three portraits that I have to finish by next week this morning I ran out to buy a new canvas and I started to paint freely , for two hours, these beautiful roses. The goal was to paint without thinking too much about the forms , the idea was to paint  the colors, the light ,the shadows, trying to spread and lengthen the shape of the vase and roses, trying  to blend the contours of the figures with the surrounding space . I painted instinctively, quickly , for two hours capturing the points of light and color spots.

I tried to paint what I feel  and what was in front of me instead of painting what I already  know.

 I tried to paint  emotions instead of forms.

 

Non ho resistito! Invece di completare i tre ritratti che devo finire per la prossima settimana questa mattina sono scappata a comprare un nuovo canvas e mi sono messa a dipingere di getto per due ore queste bellissime rose. Il goal era quello di dipingere senza pensare troppo alle forme...dipingere di getto i colori , la luce  e le ombre , cercare di spalmare e allungare la forma del vaso e delle rose, cercare di fondere i contorni delle figure con lo spazio circostante. Ho dipinto d'istinto, catturando velocemente i punti di luce e le macchie di colore . Ho cercato di dipingere guardando invece di dipingere pensando. Ho cercato di dipingere le emozioni invece delle forme.

This week is dedicated to the unfinished  paintings  or those that take an infinite time to complete . Daily  paintings that require continuous changes of color and 100 strokes per second. These portraits take away  minutes, hours , days and they  never seem to be completed until the moment in which you find yourself staring at a face on canvas , no longer 'a mass of indistinct colors. Only then you realize that you have managed  to create an 'expression, a' thrill, a real person using just  masses of colors and brushes. For a moment you feel satisfied  ... just for a moment .... then  you start  to paint a new canvas with new colors and brushes , and you are on your  own again , on a quest ...... seeking  for a new face  among masses  of indistinct colors , white canvas and dreams.

Questa settimana e' dedicata ai dipinti non finiti o a quelli che occupano un tempo infinito nelle giornate di tutti i giorni, dipinti che richiedono cambi di colore continui e 100 pennellate al secondo. Questi  ritratti tolgono giornate intere e   sembra non siano mai completati fino al momento in cui guardandoli ti ritrovi un volto davanti agli occhi e non piu' una massa di colori indistinti. Solo allora capisci che ce l'hai fatta e che hai sei riuscito/a a creare  un 'espressione , un 'emozione , una persona vera usando masse di colori e pennelli. Per un attimo ti  senti appagato/a  al settimo cielo...solo per un attimo....poi riprendi a dipingere una nuova tela  con nuovi colori e nuovi pennelli alla ricerca di un nuovo volto da creare.

I have started this painting today with a full jar of Nutella.....HAD to taste the chocolate inside in order to paint the right brown...;) I will finished it tomorrow ...but first I need to buy a new jar......

Strong - Painting # 23 -Ink and watercolor pencils (05/09/13)

This week I'm 'having fun with Kanji characters . The kanji are elegant and mysterious at the same time. I'm fascinated by the fact that with only a few brush strokes you can produce these beautiful characters. The eye glides from a line to a curve to  a blank space  ... harmoniously. The positive and negative space merge into a elaborate game of space and ink . Kanji characters are pure art  that can dominate a blank and white canvas  and does not need anything else around. I find them beautiful and perfect .... they remind me of the Tao and the concept of Yin and Yang.

Questa settimana mi sto' divertendo con i Kanji o caratteri Japponesi.  I kanji sono eleganti e misteriosi allo stesso tempo. Mi affascina il fatto che con pochi  colpi di pennello si possano produrre questi bellissimi caratteri. L'occhio scivola da una linea all'altra da una curva ad uno spazio vuoto...armonicamente. Lo spazio positivo e quello negativo si fondono  in un gioco elaborato  di spazi e inchiostro.I caratteri Kanji sono arte pura  riescono a dominare  uno spazio vuoto  e bianco e non hanno bisogno di altro intorno. Io li trovo magnifici e perfetti ....mi ricordano il Tao e il concetto di Yin and Yang.

The Blue Bird has always been, since I was a small kid,  an emblem of happiness. I remember my parents telling  me it was a symbol of happiness' and fortune ...  Every morning I look out the window  for happiness ........in the sky, on the branches of trees, on the roofs of homes, on the streets , on field of wheat, on the shoulders of the people........


L'uccellino azzurro e' sempre stato fin da quando ero piccola l'emblema della felicita'. Mi ricordo che i miei genitori mi dicevano che l'uccellino azzurro era un simbolo di felicita' e fortuna ...e  cosi' io ogni mattina  mi affacciavo alla finestra e cercavo la felicita'  nel cielo , sui rami degli alberi, sui tetti delle case, sulle strade sul prato di fronte, sul campo di grano , sulle spalle della gente.

This morning I woke up and as usual I turned on the computer to check the e-mails. Next to me ,outside , the window and a gray sky, the emerald green leaves of the trees, the warm yellow light of a lamp and the black ink of the lamp holder. What beautiful colors!What a wonderful game of contrasts.  I  HAD  to stop the moment on paper.


Stamattina mi sono alzata e come al solito ho acceso il computer per controllare le e-mails. Di fianco a me la finestra e al di fuori un cielo grigio, le foglie degli alberi verde smeraldo,  la luce di un giallo caldo della lampada e il nero inchiostro del porta lampada. Che bei colori che meraviglioso gioco di contrasti. E ne e' nato un improvviso bisogno di fermare l'attimo sulla carta.

Today I discovered two new passions: The abstract and oil colors.

I also discovered  that it is 'FORBIDDEN  to dilute oil colors with olive oil because it is too  and too colorful and alter the pigments of the oil colors or create cracks in the painting. Too bad '......... I like olive oil on everything!



Oggi ho scoperto due mie  nuove passioni : L'astratto e i colori ad olio.
Ho anche scoperto che e' vietatissimo diluire i colori ad olio con olio d'oliva o con altri oli presenti in casa perche' sono troppo acidi o troppo colorati e alterano i pigmenti dei colori o creano crepe nel dipinto. Peccato pero'.........a me l'olio d'oliva piace su tutto!
