Arts  around us : Photographer Katherine Leonard

“I never want to lose the moment. It’s why as a photography educator I advocate taking pictures with phones or cameras.  Whatever the tool, it is the experience of tapping into the environment with a deep observing eye that makes picture-making so powerful for me.

Living surrounded by trees, I interact with this world using my lens to narrate my impressions. Light through trees, seeing otherwise hidden objects and bringing them to life through my pictures deepens my connection with nature and brings me great joy.” - Katherine Leonard

Katherine Leonard, MS, is a creative professional now living in Lake Wylie, SC. Katherine brings with her over twenty years experience in the Arts, centered mostly in New York City and San Francisco. With her Master’s in Psychology in 2005, Ms. Leonard created a cutting edge program for at-risk and special needs youth, using “Photo-therapy” as a learning tool.

Ms. Leonard opened a teaching studio, KL Creative, in the summer of 2012 and just completed her second summer of Photography Camps for Kids in Lake Wylie. She opened a show called “The Best of Summer 2013 in Pictures” in September at Bagel Boat in Lake Wylie to showcase the finest work of her students.

KL Creative is a studio space located at the River Hills Marina for youth and adults to learn photography skills and expand their creative palette. Owned and operated by Ms. Leonard, its mission is to help people of all skill levels and ages take more powerful and personally satisfying pictures through one-on-one lessons and group workshops.

KL Creative Visual Arts Camp
Summer 2014

This summer KL Creative and Katherine Leonard, M.S., are proud to announce a creative collaboration with Ms. Rose Grigg, a Nationally Board Certified Art Educator with a BA in Fine Arts from Coastal Carolina University and an M.A.T. in Art Education from USC. “Both Rose and I have 20+ years experience in our respective fields and are excited to share our passion for the Arts and working with youth in KL Creative’s newly expanded summer camps.”

The photography and art sessions will each explore themes of landscape, nature, still life and portraiture. The photography pods will draw from master photographer’s examples with a focus on iconic styles, techniques and taking more powerful and personal pictures. Daily practice includes shooting on location, editing and printing. The art sessions will mirror themes explored in photography, using a variety of art forms including printmaking, drawing and sketching, paper & found object collage.

Together KL Creative will offer full days of camp from 9:00am-3:00pm on the following highlighted weeks. June 9-13, June 16-20, June 23-27, July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25, July 28-Aug.1, August 4-8 and August 11-15.
